Middleton

The design for this house was based on Middleton Place Plantation, a historic property outside of Charleston, SC. Originally built in 1755, it reflects the Dutch influence of the day with its parapet-shaped roof. This D&P-designed house is a “Charleston Single Style,” which is a reference to the fact that the house is only one room deep, so that each room could have access to a “piazza,” or a porch for breezes. This aspect was important in such a hot and humid climate prior to modern climate-controlled spaces. However, the pleasures of a continuous porch, accessed from all interior spaces, remains not only functional in moderate temperature months, but aesthetically pleasing for all seasons.
